James Gunn Confirms: ‘Starfire!’ Not a Part of the DCU

Last month, James Gunn and Peter Safran announced three “younger-skewed” animated series: Starfire!, My Adventures with Green Lantern, and DC Superpowers, co-produced with Warner Bros. Animation.

For My Adventures with Green Lantern, it’s clear that the show won’t be part of the DCU, as it takes place in the same universe as My Adventures with Superman. It follows Jessica Cruz, a teenager chosen to join the Green Lantern Corps, as she deals with the aftermath of an ancient war. The series is produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation, with My Adventures with Superman co-showrunner Jake Wyatt serving as executive producer.

The same applies to DC Superpowers. The show follows a group of new students at the Alliance School for Heroes, including Lightning, The Flash, Plastic Man, Aquagirl, Green Lantern, and Terra. Under the guidance of their principal, Martian Manhunter, they train to develop their powers and become the next generation of heroes. Matt Beans serves as the executive producer, with Michael Chang as the supervising producer.

However, Starfire! has not received as clear of a description, leaving fans wondering whether the animated series will be canon to the DCU, similar to Creature Commandos, or if it will be connected to the upcoming Teen Titans projects.

James Gunn recently clarified on Threads that Starfire! will be part of the Elseworlds universe, much like other family-oriented animated shows, and it doesn’t appear that this will change.

This isn’t too surprising, as Gunn has previously stated his interest in continuing Elseworlds projects. These animated series seem like a perfect addition to the lineup, especially considering the success of shows like Harley Quinn and My Adventures with Superman.
