James Gunn Confirms They Are Working on a Separate “Elseworlds” Opening for Non-DCU Projects

When DC Studios unveiled its ambitious plans for the DC Universe (DCU), it came with the promise of movies, TV shows, and even video games all set within the same world. Alongside these, “Elseworlds” projects would explore alternate realities, starting with The Penguin and the sequel to The Batman.

Though the new DC Studios intro has been shown, James Gunn, one of the co-CEOs, emphasized the goal to make Superman the face of the studio, much like MGM’s iconic lion. However, fans are still waiting to see the official “Elseworlds” logo, which will separate these alternate stories from the main DCU timeline.

Recently, Gunn clarified on social media how all DC projects now fall under DC Studios. He explained that while they didn’t include the new studio fanfare on the Harley Quinn series, because it predated their involvement, The Penguin features a unique DC Studios animation at the end. Gunn added that they are currently developing the opening for “Elseworlds” content:

Towards the end of 2023, Gunn outlined what qualifies a project to carry the “Elseworlds” label. He pointed out that past DCEU content often lacked consistency, which won’t be the case moving forward.

While most new films and shows will connect within the DCU, some exceptional stories, like Matt Reeves’ The Batman, will be marked as “Elseworlds” tales. Gunn also mentioned that though many TV and film projects will be part of the DCU, some standalone stories will still be allowed.

Gunn’s comments are the first updates since the holidays, and we’re hoping he continues to share more about upcoming DCU projects like Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Lanterns, Sgt. Rock, and Clayface. Stay tuned for more details as they develop.
