James Gunn is currently one of the busiest people in the superhero industry. Co-CEO of DC Studios is trying to build a new cinematic universe (mostly) from scratch and has plenty of projects either in development or in production.

The DCU officially kicks off on December 5, 2024, when the first episode of ‘Creature Commandos’ will be released on Max. While we’re on the topic of ‘Creature Commandos’ we know that the show will feature Rick Flag. Sr. in a prominent role.

The character will be voiced by Frank Grillo, and later on, Grillo will portray the character in live-action as well. We’ve already seen Grillo on the set of ‘Superman’ and on the set of ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2.

Recently James Gunn cleared up the timeline between all three projects. ‘Creature Commandos’ is the start of the universe and chronologically the first project, followed by ‘Superman’ and ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2. However, fans noticed that Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. has white hair in the animated show and black hair in ‘Superman.’

This doesn’t exactly make sense since ‘Superman’ comes after ‘Creature Commandos.’ So either the timeline is messed up, Rick dyed his hair, or found the elixir of youth somewhere along the way.

In his recent Collider interview, Gunn cleared up what went down and why Rick’s visual appearance is not consistent in the show and in the movie:

GUNN: Because that motherfucker Frank Grillo was shooting Tulsa King when we were shooting Peacemaker. We were going to originally do the white, he was going to dye it white, and then I saw somebody the other day say, “Well, what about temporary hair dye? Haven’t you ever heard of temporary hair dye?”

And I’m like, “It looks like shit. Yes, I’ve heard of that, and it looks like absolute shit when you’re putting fake gray on somebody’s very dark black hair.”

As you can see, it all comes down to Grillo shooting two projects simultaneously, and these things sometimes happen. What’s interesting is that a similar thing happened to Cavill while he was staring in the DCEU as Superman.

Henry Cavill’s mustache became a bit of a legend in the DCEU during the production of ‘Justice League’ (2017). The story goes like this: Cavill had grown a mustache for his role in ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout,’ which was filming at the same time as ‘Justice League’ reshoots.

However, due to contract obligations, Cavill was not allowed to shave it off for the reshoots of ‘Justice League,’ which led to a bizarre situation.

To avoid the mustache, digital effects were used to “erase” it in post-production, resulting in some awkward, widely discussed CGI effects that became a running joke. Fans criticized the “mustache gate” situation, particularly because the CGI was noticeable in many scenes, with Cavill’s upper lip often looking strange and smooth.
