Warner Bros., which owns the rights to DC Comics characters, originally launched the DCEU in an attempt to compete with Disney’s and Marvel’s MCU. However, the project, led by Zack Snyder, failed due to a series of controversial decisions and poorly received films.
Eventually, Snyder was replaced as Warner Bros. searched for someone to save their shared universe.
Enter James Gunn. When Gunn took over the DCEU, which was in disarray, he chose to start fresh and build a new universe, now called the DCU. His Superman movie, starring David Corenswet, will be the first major release in this new era, coming out early next year.
With fans eagerly awaiting more details, there’s been a lot of excitement about the project. Although Gunn has shared some teasers, the official trailer hasn’t dropped yet, and very little information has been revealed. However, a recent interview may offer some new insights.
In a recent interview with MovieZine, James Gunn talked about his upcoming Superman film, addressing one of the biggest concerns: the tone of the movie. Fans are curious about how the tone will impact the film’s success.
While Donner’s family-friendly Superman films were loved by many, times have changed. Today’s fans often prefer darker, more complex stories, but Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel didn’t receive universal praise.
Given Gunn’s distinct style, especially in his Guardians of the Galaxy films, fans are wondering how he will handle Superman, as we still don’t know much about the film’s direction. MovieZine asked Gunn about this, and here’s what he had to say:
Everything’s going to be totally different. One of the things I love about DC Comics is that they’ve always been able to tell different stories in different ways.
They’ve told stories that were more family-orientated, stories that were more adult-orientated, dark stories, light stories. I think for us, we just want to tell a bunch of different stories. A lot of those different stories are going to be in the DCU.
We have something that’s relatively serious like Superman and then something that’s relatively comedic like Peacemaker all in the same universe. Something very adult like Peacemaker [and] something pretty family-friendly like Superman. I think that to be able to tell different kinds of stories is kind of what makes things fun.
One of the things I’ve gotten a little sick of is all these stories being relatively the same. I’m trying to step outside of that. We at DC are trying to step outside of that.

As you can see, the film will strike a balance, blending a serious tone with a “family-friendly” vibe, which could be a great combination. We’ll keep you updated, so make sure to stay tuned for more details.
