James Gunn and Peter Safran are currently hard at work trying to kickstart a brand new cinematic universe based on DC comics characters following the ill-fated DCEU. One of the most notable projects to survive the “reset” was James Gunn’s own ‘Peacemaker’ a show that’s returning for a second season this time as a part of DCU.

Co-CEO of DC Studios confirmed that ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 will be part of the DCU canon. He assured fans that the transition from the DCEU to the DCU, especially for ‘Peacemaker,’ will be smooth and easy to follow, without causing confusion.

Gunn emphasized that he will make sure the show fits seamlessly into the new DCU storyline.

But what about ‘Peacemaker’ season 1? Well, the first word was that the season won’t be canon to the DCU.

Some “exceptions” however had to be added due to the show’s connection to ‘The Suicide Squad” and the fact that a large part of the second season’s central narrative depends on the fact that Rick Flag Jr. was killed by Peacemaker.

Gunn also previously said that only some stuff from the former DCEU will be made canon, things they specifically outline as being canon. Now the situation has gotten more complicated as Gunn explained which “specific” things aren’t canon, in the context of ‘Peacemaker’ season 1 of course.

Gunn spoke to IGN and explained that almost everything before ‘Creature Commandos’ will not be considered canon in the new DCU, with a few exceptions. He clarified that nothing is officially part of the new continuity unless it’s shown in ‘Creature Commandos’ or anything that comes after it in the DCU.

Now in Creature Commandos, you’ll hear them talk about things that happened in [The] Suicide Squad or Peacemaker, well then, those things automatically become canon.

For example, In ‘The Suicide Squad,’ Weasel survived and made a surprise return in ‘Creature Commandos,’ joining a new team led by Amanda Waller. Gunn also mentioned that a scene from ‘Peacemaker’ featuring the old Justice League, including Aquaman and Flash, has caused some confusion.

However, Gunn clarified that these versions of the characters are from the previous DC continuity, not the new DCU.

The truth is almost all of Peacemaker is canon with the exception of Justice League… which we will kind of deal with in the next season of Peacemaker,”

The thing is, the moment that DCU makes killing of Rick Flag Jr. canon, it also makes Cavill’s Superman canon to the DCU – which makes no sense at all. It’s an interesting subject and it’s rather curious to see even Gunn struggling to explain everything and going back on some of his statements made close to a year ago.
