The Guardians of the Galaxy were James Gunn’s passion project in the MCU. He crafted the story, directed the trilogy, and turned it into a massive success. With brilliant casting and a knack for delivering hits even during the MCU’s tougher times, Gunn’s era with the Guardians became iconic—but it has officially come to an end.
Now leading the DCU, Gunn is focused on building Marvel’s biggest competition. Meanwhile, Marvel seems likely to either put the Guardians on pause or reimagine them entirely, which would mark a significant departure from Gunn’s vision.
Recently, in a conversation with Josh Horowitz, Gunn revealed an intriguing detail: Marvel had plans for several Guardians of the Galaxy spin-offs at one point, offering a fascinating glimpse at what might have been.
James Gunn brought Guardians of the Galaxy to life on the big screen, with the first movie becoming an instant success. The second movie followed a similar path, and the final chapter gave fans a heartfelt goodbye to the characters, while also hinting at a very different direction for the team. During a recent interview, Gunn shared an intriguing tidbit:
Before wrapping up their collaboration with James Gunn, Marvel had three planned spin-offs from the Guardians of the Galaxy series, all of which sounded promising.
One of these was a Ravagers series, envisioned during Yondu’s time, making it a potential showcase for the wild adventures of this unconventional crew. It’s puzzling why the MCU didn’t move forward with this project, as it had incredible potential.
The second was a Legendary Star-Lord series, centered on the Guardians’ leader, with Chris Pratt reprising his role. Though Gunn wouldn’t be involved, he expressed his enthusiasm for Marvel exploring more stories with Star-Lord, even confirming his ongoing friendship with Pratt.
Pratt frequently asks Gunn for ideas about Star-Lord, and Gunn wholeheartedly supports further development of the character, hinting that this series might still have a chance in the future.
The Rocket and Groot project was originally planned to happen before the final movie, and James Gunn expressed genuine regret that it didn’t materialize. Given how the film delved into Rocket’s backstory, it seems likely that some ideas were incorporated into the movie. Still, it’s disappointing we never got to see this duo shine in their own standalone project.
