A few days ago the first trailer for ‘Superman’ was released and so far the reactions are beyond positive. The upcoming flick will be a return to classic Superman in Gunn’s already famous style.

But beyond ‘Superman’ fans are wondering what’s next for the cinematic universe, now that one project has already released and the premiere of the true start of the DCU is closing in.

‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow‘ will be the second big movie in the DCU. James Gunn is focused on creating a strong and respected DC Universe, and from what he’s said, we can expect something amazing.

Gunn has spoken highly of the project, and rumors say the script is emotionally powerful, with a deep and moving story. This matches the original comic, which is considered one of the best Supergirl stories ever told.

James Gunn explained to Omelete why he chose ‘Supergirl’ as the second film after ‘Superman.’ He says he picked this film because the script was excellent:

I didn’t necessarily know that Supergirl would be the second film we would make, but Ana [Nogueira] wrote an incredible script, and then we hired an incredible director, and we’re going to make this film after Superman because he was the best option. Other films were written, but they weren’t as good as this one. So let’s continue with this rhythm. Everything has to be good. Quality comes first in every project we do. And this is more important than telling a grandiose mega-narrative.

Gunn shared his approach to deciding which movies get approved at DC Studios. He emphasized that the focus will always be on the current story, not just future plans. He also made it clear that no film will be greenlit without a finished script, and if something doesn’t work as expected, changes will be made. He mentioned that some films and series have surprised them along the way.

I will never sacrifice the present for the future. Everything will always be about the story that is in front of us. This is the most important thing. We will not give green light to films without ready scripts. We have basic plans for what happens in the universe, but if something doesn’t work out the way we want, then it will change. We have films and series that surprised us.

‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ is set to be released in 2026. If James Gunn’s words are accurate, the film will be fully prepared by then and will be positioned to capitalize on the potential success of Superman, which premieres next year.

Filming for the movie is set to begin in England in January 2025. This timeline allows ample opportunity to create a great film and refine it into an even better cinematic experience.

Gunn also shared in the past that he has seen a screen test featuring Milly Alcock as Supergirl alongside the character Ruthye Marye Knoll, confirming her role in the film.
