James Gunn is currently building up a new cinematic universe from scratch. Titled DCU, it’s supposed to replace Snyder’s ill-fated DCEU which has seen both major success and major failures over the years.

The DCU officially kickstarts with the release of ‘Creature Commandos’ this December, but both Safran and Gunn stated on several occasions that ‘Superman’ bound for a 2025 release is the true start of the DCU.

Even though the plot of the projects that will introduce Man of Steel and Dark Knight to the cinematic universe is currently under wraps. We more or less know the stories that the movies are inspired by and they are by no means origin stories.

They follow already-established superheroes, something that Gunn confirmed in the past. Still, some fans find it weird that DCU won’t kick off with a solid origin story for Batman or Superman. James Gunn recently decided to address this issue on Threads:

I’m not telling Batman and Superman’s origin stories again because everyone knows them. And don’t put Swamp Thing in the corner. That’s a project in development we’ve actually announced, and he’s an incredibly well known character with not only some of the greatest comics of all time but a successful film series and his own TV show, something that could be said of only a very small handful of DC characters.

James Gunn said he’s skipping Batman and Superman’s origin stories because everyone already knows them.

He also addressed the issue of focusing on niche characters like Swamp Thing saying that the character has great comics, popular movies, and a TV show, which make him a special character in the DC universe.

Skipping Superman’s origin story makes sense because it’s already been shown in movies like 1978’s ‘Superman’ and 2013’s ‘Man of Steel.’ Since Superman is one of the most famous superheroes ever, there’s no need to repeat it. Similarly, other heroes like Batman and Spider-Man have moved away from retelling their origins in recent films like ‘The Batman’ and the MCU’s ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy.

What do you think? Should James Gunn retell the origin stories? Let us know in the comments below!
