James Gunn Says Dave Bautista Prefers a Different Role Over Bane in DC Studios: “I don’t think Dave wants to be Bane anymore”

James Gunn is busy building the DCU from the ground up. Today marks the release of the first two episodes of Creature Commandos internationally, officially kicking off the DCU. With this first project out of the way, there’s still a full slate of exciting upcoming projects for fans to look forward to.

One of the projects that was only recently confirmed to be in development was a live-action movie focusing on two villains – Bane and Deathstroke. While not much is known about the movie, fans are already wondering who will portray the two villains.

James Gunn recently talked to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and Horrowitz asked whether Dave Bautista is being considered for the Bane role. As you are likely aware James Gunn recently asked fans to find a role for Bautista in the DCU, and the fans predominately fan cast him as Bane.

James Gunn however revealed something extremely interesting. According to the director, Bautista might not interested in the role.

I don’t think Dave wants to be Bane anymore…I think Dave would much rather be another character than Bane right now.

Gunn also added that he loves Bautista and wants to work with the actor again, but Bane is really not the role for him. Both Horowitz and Gunn referenced the fact that Bautista is much slimmer than several years ago, something that fans were concerned with a few months back.

And ultimately, Bautista himself explained that he was not interested in the role some time ago:

And, also, I have to say that I appreciate that because I don’t want to play a character that I can’t bring justice to it. I don’t think at this point in my career that I can bring justice to Bane anymore. I just don’t know if I could handle the physical part, and I don’t think I would have the longevity to plan ahead for films. So, I just don’t know if I’d be that guy.

Now if your number 1 fan cast was Bautista as Bane, you can confidently cross that off your list.
