James Gunn at this point has quite a history in the superhero world. He’s been a part of the MCU, giving rise to the highly profitable ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ franchise. He’s also been a part of Snyder’s doomed DCEU.

When he and Safran took over the reins of DC Studios, they announced their complete reboot and a full slate of projects. But talking is easier than doing and now more than a year since the initial announcement we have a better picture of how Gunn plans to create a cinematic universe that will surpass both MCU and DCEU.

When the initial slate was announced we got some insight into what kind of universe James Gunn is trying to create. The co-CEO of DC Studios said that his universe will be similar to Star Wars and Game of Thrones, with plenty of morally complex characters and stuff happening all around. Gunn summarized all the differences between MCU, DCU, and even former DCEU:

think that we have a lot of differences. I think that one of the reasons why I love DC is it really is another universe. It’s an alternate world. In Marvel generally, it’s New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and then every place else in the world is a fictional universe for some reason. Here at DCU we have Metropolis and Gotham and Themyscira and Atlantis, and all of that is sort of another fictional universe. And this is the world that we’re creating.

We’re coming into a world where superheroes exist and have existed for some time in one form or another, and that’s the universe. And so we are telling a big, huge central story. Except for, I think, we’re a lot more planned out than Marvel from the beginning, because we’ve gotten a group of writers together to work that story out completely. But we’re also creating a universe that is like Star Wars where there are different times, different places, different things, [and] like Game of Thrones, where characters are a little bit more morally complex.

In that statement, the thing that stuck with fans the most was the “morally complex” characters bit, something that Zack Snyder has been heavily criticized for. Snyder gave a brutal and darker spin on the iconic characters. Both Batman and Superman were willing to break their no-killing rule. Snyder claimed that characters are boring and fake if they can’t kill, he attempted to humanize them and put them in morally complex situations more similar to what they truly encounter, paired with decisions that they would realistically have to make.

Gunn’s statement caused quite a stir with the fans:
