James Gunn Teases Jason Momoa’s Lobo in Supergirl, But Admits Fans Will Have to Wait

More than two years ago, James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios as Co-Producers and Co-CEOs, they announced a slate of movies and shows that will reboot the ill-fated DCEU. This also meant that actors like Cavill, Momoa, and Gal Gadot who were loved by fans wouldn’t continue portraying their roles in future DC adaptations.
Even though some actors like Cavill already moved to different projects it’s been pretty much rumored from day one that Momoa won’t exactly leave DC or WB for that matter as he has been heavily rumored to play Lobo. The rumors were mostly fueled by Momoa’s physical resemblance to the character and the fact that he wanted to play him for a long time now.
Then a few months ago it was confirmed that Momoa will indeed play Lobo in the DCU. Momoa will debut in the upcoming ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,’ which will be the second movie in production and the second DCU movie released overall as confirmed by James Gunn.
The movie is already deep in development and is ready to start production soon, but James Gunn recently revealed that it will take some time before fans get an official look at Jason Momoa as Lobo in the movie since it won’t require outdoor filming, there’s no risk of leaked set photos forcing them to reveal his look early.
This allows the team to control when and how they release the first official image of Momoa as the character.
“It’s probably going to be a while… We’re not gonna have to go shoot outside… so we [don’t] have to release a picture earlier than we’d want to.”
This approach makes perfect sense, especially considering how early set leaks from Superman sparked mixed reactions. Some fans were quick to criticize the costumes and overall production quality, calling them cheap based on out-of-context, unpolished behind-the-scenes photos.
By keeping ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’s’ filming indoors, Gunn and his team can avoid similar premature judgments and ensure that the first impression of Jason Momoa’s Lobo is delivered exactly as they intend—fully polished and ready to impress.
