James Gunn is creating a new cinematic universe called the DCU, which will replace the old DCEU. The DCU officially started with the release of Creature Commandos, but both Gunn and Safran have said that Superman, set for release in 2025, will be the real beginning of the DCU.
Currently, Peacemaker season 2 is in production, and a new TV show called Lanterns is being developed, which will follow three Green Lanterns: Guy Gardner, John Stewart, and Hal Jordan.
It has recently been revealed that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will begin production in January 2025, with a planned release in 2026. Gunn also clarified that just because some projects are listed on the release slate, it doesn’t mean they will definitely be released. This is because Gunn insists on having a finished script before starting production, and if the script isn’t up to standard, the project won’t move forward.
In addition to Supergirl, fans can look forward to projects like Paradise Lost, The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, an untitled Teen Titans project, a film focusing on Bane and Deathstroke, Booster Gold TV series, Waller, and a movie about Swamp Thing.
As you can see, the slate is packed. However, during his recent appearance on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, James Gunn teased an upcoming project centered around The Huntress.
“The goal from the beginning was to give the honor that the great characters deserved; the Wonder Womans, Batmans, and Supermans. But then also to prop up these lesser-known characters like Peacemaker, Booster Gold, and The Huntress
The Huntress, also known as Helena Wayne (Bertinelli,) is a superhero in DC Comics. She is the daughter of a Mafia family, but after her family was killed, she became a vigilante seeking justice. She fights crime using her skills in hand-to-hand combat and with weapons like crossbows. The Huntress often works alongside other superheroes like Batman and the Birds of Prey.
This is the first time we have heard about this potential project, but we certainly like the idea, especially considering how much Gunn loves adapting relatively unknown characters.
Even if the project focusing on The Huntress gets developed, we will likely need to wait for ‘The Brave and the Bold’ to release first, considering her connection to Batman.
