James Gunn Throws Subtle Shade at “Most Studios” Explaining His Creative Process: “Quality is of utmost priority”

James Gunn has quite a lot on his plate currently, ‘Superman’ only finished shooting a couple of weeks ago, and production is currently underway on the second season of ‘Peacemaker.’ Gunn is trying to kickstart a rebooted DCU from the ashes of the ill-fated DCEU, and so far, fans like what they are seeing but the director is still facing some controversies.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ director has been called out for plenty of things and is often the subject of various criticism by the fans who do not like that DCEU is over.

Since the director is pretty active on social media, he tries his best to debunk certain notions and explain his creative process. The most recent explanation was related to a fan question. One fan on Threads social network asked James Gunn whether the projects would shuffle again referencing the fact that the timeline of release was never made clear and some projects were implied to be released before others.

James Gunn explained that the projects weren’t announced in definitive order and that the only project that truly shuffled was the ‘Waller’ TV show. Gunn explained that they would never start shooting the movie without a finished script, something that most studios practice.

Filming without a finished script can lead to budget overruns. Unplanned changes or additional reshoots required to accommodate script revisions can increase costs significantly.

Some of the most notable examples of this practice in recent times were ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ which had to undergo extensive reshoots following massive script changes and ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ which accumulated an eye-watering budget following reshoots.

The fact that Gunn never starts shooting with a script could also be one of the things related to the fact that he barely does any reshoots, as the director recently explained. He implied that ‘Superman’ bound to be released in 2025 won’t undergo additional reshoots, which made fans quite happy.
