James Gunn’s Recent DCU Comments Restore Fans’ Hope for the Future of Superhero Genre: “This is what we want”

James Gunn is currently busy building an entirely new cinematic universe based on a character from DC Comics. The first DCU project to release will be ‘Creature Commandos’ arriving on Max on December 5, 2024. However, the director and co-CEO of DC Studios stated in several instances that ‘Superman’ is the true start of the DCU.

Gunn recently spoke to fans during NYCC DC Studios panels and revealed some exciting takes on the DCU.

In this statement, Gunn emphasized that each project produced by DC Studios will have its unique identity and style, even though they are all part of the same cinematic universe.

He highlights that while characters like Superman, Supergirl, and Lanterns will coexist within this universe, the aesthetic and thematic elements of each project will be distinct, allowing for a diverse range of storytelling and visual experiences.

Every project of DC Studios will be it’s own thing. Everything is going tremendously well. Superman, Supergirl, Lanterns. They are apart of this cinematic universe, but every one of those things will be very different aesthetically.

This is something that fans clearly look forward to, judging by the amount of positive reactions to the statement:

I guess you can argue that this was also the case for DCEU (as you can’t really say that ‘Man of Steel’ and ‘Shazam!’ had the same vibe.

It’s also the case for the MCU, as ‘Echo’ and ‘Agatha All Along’ are also drastically different both in tone and aesthetics, but I guess Gunn has something special planned, and obviously, fans identify this repetitiveness as an issue.

Gunn also revealed during the same panel that we should expect ‘Superman’ trailer soon, but not too soon, and that ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ starts filming in January 2025.
