Back in in 2013, John Carpenter stated that he was interested in adapting the enormously popular game ‘Dead Space’ for the big screens. EA, the game’s publisher has expressed plans to potentially develop a film series based on the franchise. The announcement hung in the void for almost 10 years when Carpenter stated that the movie is in fact in development but under a new director.
That director was heavily rumored to be James Wan, who was at the time high on the ‘Aquaman’ fame. After all the director already had experience with the game as he directed the trailer for the game back in 2008.
Now the latest rumors regarding the potential adaptation claim that what was originally planned to be a live-action movie has instead turned into an animated movie.
The rumors came from Daniel Richtman via his paid newsletter, and keep in mind that currently no official sources corroborated this rumor.
‘Dead Space’ is a sci-fi horror franchise created by Glen Schofield, developed by Visceral Games, and published by Electronic Arts. The story is told in a non-linear way, with games, movies, comics, and novels adding to the ongoing plot. Set in the 26th century, it follows engineer Isaac Clarke as he battles undead creatures caused by the alien Marker, which is central to a dangerous cult called Unitology.
The cult seeks to use the Marker to trigger “Convergence,” aiming to wipe out humanity under the Marker’s dark influence.
The game already has two animated adaptations. ‘Dead Space: Downfall’ is a 2008 animated prequel to the first game, showing how the Necromorph outbreak began on the USG Ishimura after the Red Marker was brought aboard from Aegis VII. ‘Dead Space: Aftermath,’ released in 2011, is a sequel to ‘Downfall’ and the first game, focusing on EarthGov’s attempts to study Marker fragments by experimenting on an unsuspecting crew.
