‘X-Men ’97’ turned out to be a surprise hit for the Marvel Studios. Ever since the first episode was released the show had consistently high ratings, and fans praised it for its story, authenticity, and faithfulness to the original show and numerous improvements made to characters.
Having said that, the show wasn’t without controversies, especially when the creators of the show went public that Morph was non-binary, and in episode 3, the romance between Morph & Wolverine was teased for the first time.
As the season progressed the hints started to become more obvious, with the final confirmation delivered in the final episode, and by the creator of the show himself – Beau DeMayo.
A portion of the fans naturally, had objections to this, despite clarification that Wolverine is not necessarily in love with Morph, but Morph does have strong feelings for Wolverine. DeMayo also stated on his private X profile, that some fans are “straight-washing” Morph’s feelings for Wolverine.
Now in his recent interview with Polygon JP Karliak, a genderqueer person himself, revealed that the idea of romance between Morph and Wolverine is not all that appealing to him:
As somebody who’s consumed a ton of queer media over the years — what coded things we had in the ’90s — I think there have been so many stories told about the queer person that’s pining over the straight best friend. Meh! It’s kind of meh to me! I think it’s so much more interesting that they love each other like they’re Frodo and Samwise, and that’s great. It doesn’t need to be more than that. And they can support each other. It makes Morph razzing Wolverine by turning into Jean Grey so much less about like, Oh, I’m jealous, so I’m gonna, like, razz you about your girlfriend who I hate, and more about, Hey, buddy, I think this is harmful for you, and I just want to point this out, that maybe you need to move on.
Karliak is absolutely correct that “queer friend pinning over straight friend” is perhaps an overused plot, that’s not going to add to the story too much besides the drama, and we already have plenty of that in the comics and subsequent adaptions when it comes to Wolverine’s love life.
