One extremely anticipated Marvel Studios project that had problems way before the strikes began is ‘Blade.’ It is an MCU-based movie following Eric Brooks, the most notable vampire hunter in comics, and a reboot of the already highly popular ‘Blade’ trilogy that contributed to paving the way for the MCU that we know today.
It would be hard to summarize all the problems that ‘Blade’ had so far, the main star of the movie Mahershala Ali approached the studio with the pitch a long time ago and was officially announced as Blade in 2018. Since then, it’s been a constant cycle of script problems and the movie changed several writers (and directors) over the course of development.
Last year, the former director of the movie Yann Demange claimed that the movie is rated R, and he stated that it’s extremely important for him to get that rating since it’s the only way to do a character justice.
They gave me the R, which is so important.
Now in his recent podcast interview with BlackTree TV, Feige seemingly confirmed the movie’s rating, stressing once again that this type of rating is inherent for the character:
I think that’s right. “I mean, for the last two years as we’ve been trying to crack that movie, the most important thing for us is not rushing it and making sure we are making the right Blade movie. […] Because there were some great Blade movies years ago — they were all rated-R. So I think that’s, like Deadpool, inherent with the character of Blade.
Marvel Studios has been venturing into R-rated content for a while now, slowly opening themselves up for some darker and more mature stories. We’ve already had one Disney+ TV-MA show with the release of ‘Echo,’ and we’re patiently expecting the first R-rated animated project ‘Marvel Zombies.’ MCU’s first R-rated movie, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ releases this week, and will hopefully set up a bright future for mature-rated content within the franchise.
