Liev Schreiber Explains Why He Didn’t Return as Sabertooth in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

‘Deadpool & Wolverine‘ was one of the year’s most eagerly awaited films for many fans. With Hugh Jackman reprising his role as Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds returning as Deadpool, the movie largely met fan expectations. The film is packed with Easter Eggs and cameos, and while fans have uncovered many, some still intrigue us.

Liev Schreiber’s Sabertooth was a fan-favorite character many hoped to see, but he didn’t make it into the film—though a version of Sabertooth did. In a recent interview with Collider, Schreiber explained why he didn’t return for this installment.

Liev Schreiber’s portrayal of Sabertooth was a standout element in an otherwise poorly received film. His performance was strong, and fans appreciated his dynamic with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. When ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ presented an opportunity for his return, many fans hoped to see him reprise the role. However, he did not. In a recent interview with Collider, Schreiber shared the reasons behind his decision and expressed pride in the strong fan support for his return.

“It’s amazing. I can’t begin to tell you what it feels like when people are thinking about something you did and are so appreciative of it that they want you to do it again. I was so surprised that we had that many fans, and I was so surprised that people were campaigning for me to be in the new Deadpool movie. (…) To be honest, it’s a lot of work getting your body up to that point. I know I watched Hugh [Jackman] get himself ready again, and I thought, ‘I’m okay to sit by the sidelines.”

As it turns out, Schreiber’s reasons for not returning were personal. It’s unclear whether Marvel approached him directly and he declined, or if his response was more hypothetical. Regardless of the specifics, Schreiber’s absence was due to personal reasons, and that should be respected.

While we did see a version of Sabertooth in the film, it’s a disappointment that it wasn’t Schreiber’s portrayal. Given how the character was presented, however, it might have worked out for the best.
