A Little History

Loki, otherwise known as the God of Mischief, is the adopted son of Odin and brother of Thor.

He hails from Jotunheim and is the son of Laufey, the ruler of the Frost Giants and sworn enemies to Asgard. After the fall of Jotunheim and the defeat of Laufey, he was taken in by Odin to be raised as his son. Because of his unusually small size for a Frost Giant, Laufey had to hide Loki due to the shame he felt for him. Luckily, because of his size, he easily blended into the Asgard people.

As he aged, he became the more mischievous of Odin’s two children. He also became filled with hatred and jealous over the lopsided affection that Odin showed his biological son, Thor. Worse yet, Asgardians held bravery, strength, courage, and tenacity above all else. These were all traits that Thor held and not Loki.

Instead of trying to compete with Thor in these realms, he shifted his attention to studying magic and science. Due to his knowledge of these subjects, Loki often pulled terrible tricks against Thor.

Eventually, his greed and lust for power overtook him. He used his magical abilities in his pursuit to become the most feared and strongest God in Asgard. As opposed to when he was young and his tricks were innocent, Loki now used his abilities in diabolical and malicious ways.

These ways resulted in Odin trapping Loki inside a tree. He remained in the tree until someone shed a tear for him. Knowing that he had no friends or family who cared, he used a leaf to strike Heimdall (the guardian of Asgard) in the eye. This, of course, caused his eye to water. Upon his release, he was exiled out of Asgard.

Ultimately, Loki’s tricks lead him to Earth. This caused the known heroes to band together to foil him. This particular instance leads to the birth of the Avengers.
