Lost ‘Powerpuff Girls’ Live-Action Trailer Leaks Online
A live-action series based on The Powerpuff Girls was in development at The CW back in 2020. The show was meant to depict Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup as “disillusioned twentysomethings,” dealing with the consequences of their childhoods spent fighting crime. The show would have shown the girls reuniting when the world needed them most.
The series was being produced by Warner Bros. Television Studios, with Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody writing the script. The pilot was officially ordered in February 2021, with Maggie Kiley set to direct.
The cast included Chloe Bennet as Blossom, Dove Cameron as Bubbles, and Yana Perrault as Buttercup. Donald Faison was cast as Professor Utonium, and Tom Kenny was returning as the narrator from the original cartoon.
However, things didn’t go as planned. After the script leaked and received overwhelmingly negative reviews on social media, The CW decided to rework it. In August 2021, Chloe Bennet dropped out of the project due to scheduling conflicts.
In May 2022, it was reported that the show was still in some form of redevelopment, but by May 2023, The CW announced the series had been canceled by its new majority owners, Nexstar Media Group. The rights were then returned to Warner Bros. Television.
Despite the cancellation, a trailer for the show has recently leaked online, giving fans a glimpse of what could have been. The trailer is now circulating online, sparking interest and discussion about what the live-action series might have looked like if it had been completed.
If you take a look at fan reactions, it’s clear that they are overwhelmingly negative, with some even calling for the trailer to be erased from the internet by any means necessary.
I have to agree that the trailer feels cringeworthy, even by CW’s usual standards, and it’s no surprise the show didn’t meet quality expectations. The actors involved are probably relieved they won’t have to pay their PR teams extra to scrub this from their professional records.
