Sony Pictures obtained the film rights to Spider-Man in the late 1990s, leading to the production of several Spider-Man films, starting with Sam Raimi’s trilogy featuring Tobey Maguire.
When Marvel Studios began developing its own cinematic universe in the late 2000s, it did not own the film rights to Spider-Man. Instead, it focused on characters for which it retained rights, like Iron Man and Thor.
Considering that ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ movies starring Garfield flopped, the newly established MCU needed one of its most profitable and popular characters. The deal was reached and Tom Holland became MCU’s Spider-Man.
At the same time, Sony was developing its own cinematic universe called SSU – Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. The cinematic universe currently doesn’t have Spider-Man in it, but it does have several movies focusing on Spider-Man’s supporting characters like Morbius, Venom, Madame Web, etc.
This year we are set to watch two SSU installments, ‘Venom: The Last Dance,’ and ‘Kraven the Hunter.’
Now we already reported that Sony and Marvel will reportedly re-negotiate their deal, now some additional details have been revealed and it has everything to do with villains.
According to The Geeky Cast’s Chad Ryan, Sony will now inform Marvel Studios about which Spider-Man-related villains will appear in its non-MCU projects, blocking Marvel from using those characters for at least 30 days after the Sony film’s VOD release.
This change could allow Kraven the Hunter to enter the MCU, likely as a new variant, provided Marvel meets the necessary requirements. This development aims to enhance communication and give Marvel more freedom to use desired villains, such as Kraven, who they wanted in ‘No Way Home’ but were unable to include due to Sony’s plans for an origin story.
Additionally, future Marvel movies produced by Sony must have budgets of at least $75 million and be shown in a minimum of 2,000 U.S. theaters. Overall, these adjustments suggest a restructured deal that could benefit both the MCU and Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.
The newly reported deal means that rumors of Knull coming to the MCU to be Spider-Man 4 villain are not so far-fetched and that Venom and Carnage might join as well.
No one knows what the future holds for SSU, but the latest reports stated that Sony is definitely not giving up on its cinematic universe despite a string of eye-watering failures.
