Did You Know? The Captain Marvel name and trademark was heavily involved in a legal battle. Ultimately, Marvel won the battle and the name and trademark was theirs to use.

A Little History

Captain Marvel first appeared inside the pages of Marvel Superheroes #12 and was created by Stan Lee and illustrated by Gene Colan.

As a member of the Kree Empire, he never found a way to fit in. This was primarily due to the fact most Kree have blue skin and he had white. Even with all odds against him, he rose the ranks of the Kree Military due to his involvement in many of their wars.

Under the guidance of Yon-Rogg, he was asked to keep watch over the planet, Earth. He did this because Yon-Rogg was interested in the human exploration of space. While on Earth, Yon-Rogg ordered Mar-Vell to infiltrate a portion of Florida. What he didn’t realize was that, due to the jealousy he had, Yon-Rogg intended to attack Florida and the Kree Warrior along with it. Yon-Rogg did fire on Florida and instead of killing his subordinate, he killed Dr. Walter Lawson.

Mar-Vell, who resembled Lawson, took the opportunity presented to him and began posing as the deceased Doctor. Yon-Rogg eventually found him and sent the Kree robot, Sentry to track down and kill him. Of course, this did not work and he was able to defeat of Sentry. With onlookers watching, and Mar-Vell standing tall over Sentry, he was mistakenly called Captain Marvel and the name stuck.

Captain Marvel has become a symbol of hope and freedom not only the inhabitants of Earth but the entire galaxy.
