‘Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra’ is an upcoming action-adventure video game set during World War II in Occupied Paris. The game follows Captain America (Steve Rogers) and Black Panther (Azzuri), the king of Wakanda, as they team up to stop the rise of the Hydra terrorist group.

It is developed by Skydance New Media and published by Plaion, with a release date set for 2025. The game is inspired by the 2010 Marvel Comics series ‘Captain America / Black Panther: Flags of Our Fathers.’

Writer and producer of the game, Amy Hennig recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly and discussed it in great detail starting with the setting and the historic teamup in the game.

Starting with the setting, Henning explained the novelty and the freedom that came with it. She explained that the game’s setting allowed them to explore a younger Steve Rogers, still finding his way, instead of the more experienced version seen in the films. It also gave them the opportunity to introduce a new Black Panther from 1943.

It led us to do a bunch of interesting things, one of which was to not only tell a story with a young Steve Rogers who’s still trying to find his feet, as opposed to the more seasoned guy that we’ve seen in a lot of the films. It also let us introduce a new Black Panther of 1943.

It led us to tap into all the things that I love, all of the wonderful tropes of World War II-era adventure films, classic men-on-a-mission movies, and all of that. There’s a lot of intrigue in our story, a lot of twists and turns, fascinating characters, and interesting locations.

One of the locations was revealed to EW and is featured below:

The producer explained that in 1943, Wakanda was isolated and protected by its jungle, choosing not to get involved in outside conflicts. However, events force them to act in order to protect their interests. Captain America and Black Panther initially clash but must eventually work together to defeat common enemies, like Hydra.

She also teased that there’s a third super soldier in Paris, and while details are being kept secret, the game’s story will revolve around a growing threat that pushes the characters forward.

Wakanda at this point in time is hidden away from the outside world and protected by this impenetrable jungle. They are non-interventionist, but events transpire that pull them into the conflict. They have to protect their interests. The world is getting smaller. No satellites yet, but there will be soon. You can shoot down planes that maybe want to fly over Wakanda, but how long can you stay in the shadows?

In the game, players will experience the story from four different perspectives. Along with Captain America and Black Panther, players will also control Gabriel Jones, a U.S. soldier and sharpshooter, and Nanali, a Wakandan spy in Paris.

Other characters include Julie, a key member of the French Resistance, and Howard Stark, played by Joel Johnstone. Each character has unique skills that players will use in different parts of the game.

Hennig said she wants to make ‘Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra’ feel as realistic and immersive as possible, despite its fantastical elements. She aims for high-quality visuals so players forget they’re playing a game and feel like they’re part of a Marvel movie.

Drawing from her experience with ‘Uncharted,’ she hopes the game will be engaging not just for players, but for those watching too. Her goal is to offer a new, cinematic experience that brings familiar Marvel characters and stories to life in a fresh way.

We’re entirely CG, so it’s really easy to get ungrounded real quick. You can see even the movies can fall under that trap; too much CG and you don’t know the ground you’re standing on. We really wanted the visual fidelity to be high so that you could kind of forget that you’re looking at a game, that it should feel and look and sound and smell like you’re watching a great Marvel movie or TV show, but you’re driving the action.
