Marvel Announces New Spider-Girl Series by Torunn Grønbekk and André Risso

Big news from Marvel! A brand-new Spider-Girl series is coming this June, written by Torunn Grønbekk and featuring art by André Risso. This isn’t just another hero in a spider suit—this is Maka Akana, a former villain trying to turn her life around.
Originally introduced by Dan Slott and Paco Medina, she first appeared as the twisted protege of Bullseye, going by the name Funhouse. She took on the ‘Spider-Girl’ identity in a brutal tournament against Spider-Boy, and now it looks like she’s keeping the name for good.
The new Spider-Girl #1 promises plenty of action. Fresh off Bullseye’s betrayal, Maka is trying to walk the hero path, but things get messy fast. When she clashes with Vermin, she realizes a dangerous Spider-Man villain is hunting her. The problem? She has no idea why. Even worse, some of her so-called allies might want her dead.
Maka’s story is far from ordinary. She’s a mutant with power-absorbing abilities, but ever since her last fight with Spider-Boy, things have gone wrong. Now, she’s stuck with a corrupted version of his spider powers. This series will dive deep into her past, reveal just how dangerous her abilities can be, and test whether she can really leave her villain days behind.
Grønbekk is excited to bring her story to life, calling Spider-Girl ‘joyful, irreverent, mischievous, and righteous.’ She’s moving to New York, ready to make her own way. She’s reckless, jumping into fights most people would run from, and it’s getting the criminal underworld’s attention. But not for the reasons you’d expect.
Adding to the excitement, André Risso is making his Marvel debut, and his art is packed with high-energy action. With his style and Grønbekk’s storytelling, this series is shaping up to be something special.
Spider-Girl #1 drops June 11, with a cover by David Nakayama. If you thought Spider-Boy had it rough, wait until you see what’s coming for Maka Akana.
