Marvel Is Preparing to Introduce a New Pantheon of Thunder Gods
Marvel has big plans for the 50th anniversary of Storm, one of the most iconic mutants. A special issue, Storm #7, will introduce a fresh lineup of Thunder Gods to mark this milestone.
The preview for Storm #7 hints at an exciting celebration of Ororo Munroe’s debut in Giant Size X-Men (1975) #1: ‘Fifty years ago, Ororo thundering her way into our hearts! In her solo series, she will host debuts and reinventions of fice legendary thunder gods: Thor, Chaac, Sango, Mamaragan, and Susanoo! But first, a mission to Brazil goes horribly wrong. How much more can Storm endure?’
This issue hits shelves on April 9.
Storm’s solo series, which started last October as part of the X-Men’s From the Ashes era, follows her journey after the loss of Krakoa. Storm sets up a new headquarters and faces several challenges.
She’s also been making waves in other Marvel titles, even joining the Avengers. A special one-shot, Storm: Lifedream, celebrating Black History Month, is set to release on January 29.
Marvel has also shared new concept art by Luciano Vecchio for the Thunder Gods. The designs show Chaac, Shango, Susanoo, and Mamaragan, each reflecting their cultural backgrounds and real-world iconographies. A sneak peek reveals Mamaragan riding a monstrous creature, surrounded by swirling lightning.
Series writer Murewa Ayodele expressed excitement about the upcoming issue, saying, ‘Creative giants Len Wein and Dave Cockrum changed the Marvel landscape with Giant Size X-Men #1. This year, we’ll do the same with Storm #7.’ Ayodele added, ‘Bold words, I know, but I’ve read the illustrated issue.’
Artist Luciano Vecchio shared insights on designing the Thunder Gods. He first based each God on Ayodele’s descriptions and cultural references, then added a Marvel twist. ‘This is the Marvel Universe, so the second stage was injecting some Kirby-like fantasy vibes and incorporating design elements from the original Thor and Storm designs for a cohesive feel.’
Storm #7 will be available on April 9 from Marvel Comics.
