‘Agatha All Along’ is the latest entry in the MCU. The show introduced plenty of interesting characters to the cinematic universe, and one of them was a cosmic entity – Lady Death.
As you are likely aware due to the nature and scope of her powers, Death is difficult to incorporate into storylines, but ‘Agatha All Along’ managed to do it perfectly.
Aubrey Plaza’s Rio Vidal aka Lady Death was introduced at the start of the show, but the viewers weren’t aware that we were dealing with the cosmic entity. It was revealed that Rio and Agatha have a very painful and complicated past which further helped humanize the character for the viewers.
This humanization was vital in nailing just the perfect version of Lady Death as she is shown grieving and being hurt and affected by the seemingly “mortal affairs” just like any other character would be.
It was only later after Rio was finally revealed as Death that we got the taste of her magnificent power as the character can be seen literally tearing apart the fabric of reality. This is secondary, however, as it is the character’s grounded nature that allows Death to appear in subsequent projects.
In ‘Marvel Studios’ Assembled: The Making of Agatha All Along, ‘Aubrey Plaza talked about playing Death, explaining that she enjoyed the character’s complexity and contradictions.
She appreciated being able to play three different versions of the same character, which she felt could work well in the MCU due to her otherworldly and yet grounded nature. Plaza also mentioned how working with Kathryn Hahn, who played Agatha, helped bring out new aspects of her character.
Plaza’s portrayal of Death highlights her calm, curious nature, showing the character’s cosmic neutrality while hinting at some vulnerability.
She embraced the challenge of making Death both dangerous and compassionate. The actress’ excitement for the character suggests she would be eager to explore Death more.
We recently reported that there are some old rumors making rounds that Death will get her own spinoff. While these rumors weren’t confirmed by official sources, we think that this could work. Death does have one of the most interesting “jobs” in the Multiverse.
But aside from the spinoff show, both Agatha and Billy were teased as having a future that will further be explored in the MCU, and we can only hope that Lady Death returns to accompany them.
