During Disney+ Day 2021, it was revealed that an animated ‘Marvel Zombies’ TV series was in development for Disney+, with Zeb Wells serving as the writer and executive producer. The series continues the universe established in the ‘What If…?’ episode titled ‘What If… Zombies!?’.
At San Diego Comic-Con 2022, it was announced that the series would be rated TV-MA and would premiere in 2024. In an interview on October 8, 2022, Zeb Wells shared that the first season would consist of four episodes. On November 28, 2023, Iman Vellani confirmed her involvement, voicing Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, who is one of the main characters in the series.
Not much is known regarding the plot of the series except for the fact that it won’t be a direct adaptation of the famous comic storyline, but we can assume that it’s going to have plenty of gore and action sequences. Due to that, the fandom was excited with the series with the show’s rating because it opened up a lot of possibilities in terms of what can be shown on screen. This is something that Brad Winderbaum, head of animation for Marvel Studios confirmed in his interview with IGN.
In terms of more mature animation, yeah, we’re making a ‘Marvel Zombies’ show right now that is pretty intense that’s for sure a TV-MA show. And again, it’s trying to honor the comics. And what was so great about the comics was it not pulling its punches. That’s certainly what we’re going for on that project also.
This aligns with the reports that ‘Marvel Zombies’ will be released under Marvel Spotlight, just like ‘Echo’ was. The official description for the spotlight is that the series released under it are usually standalone and character-driven, but we can also assume that the “spotlight” projects are also more mature in nature.
Marvel Studios will focus more on mature content and animation in the upcoming years, especially now that the release of ‘Echo’ was relatively successfully received, as well as ‘X-Men ’97’, the show that debuted with 100 % on Rotten Tomatoes.
