Marvel Studios Reportedly Bows to Pressure, Cuts All of Sabra’s Ties to Israel in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’

‘Captain America: Brave New World’ is lining up controversies even before its release. Besides alleged poor quality that resulted in millions being shelled out on costly reshoots, one of the big characters in the movie is also facing calls for removal.

The controversy surrounding Sabra, a Jewish superhero with a background in Mossad, began when her role in the movie was first announced. Tensions escalated after reports of extensive reshoots, as fans learned that Sabra remained in the film despite the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, fueling further debate.

Sabra’s appearance in the ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ trailer angered many fans, with some threatening to boycott the movie. Fans hoped her origin would be altered, as her MCU description mentions her as a former Black Widow and confidante to President Thaddeus Ross, with no reference to her Israeli background or Mossad ties. This led to accusations that Marvel was erasing her Israeli origins.

A few days after the trailer’s release and the reveal of her “origin” Insiders spoke to The Wrap and admitted that her origin wasn’t changed, it just wasn’t broadcasted in the trailer:

Then ADL spoke with a statement:

We’re pleased to learn that Sabra will be retaining her Israeli identity in ‘Captain America, Brave New World,’ and is still being portrayed by the wonderful Israeli actress Shira Haas. Marvel Studios should be commended for not capitulating to the anti-Israel forces who wanted this character’s identity quashed, along with her backstory.

But if the latest reports are true, Marvel Studios did indeed capitulate under the anti-Israel forces as Sabra’s ethnicity won’t be mentioned in the movie. According to Daniel Richtman notable industry insider and leaker Sabra’s origin is no longer Jewish, she is simply a Black Widow.

Marvel Studios has reportedly removed all references to Ruth/Sabra’s Israeli origins in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ following backlash. Initially, Sabra was set to reveal to Sam that she is a Mutant, but her character has now been changed to a powerless former Black Widow.

If we take a look at the reactions to this (unconfirmed) news, they are not as positive, and plenty of fans called for a complete removal of the characters:

Considering the charged political situation, it’s tough to juggle the wants and needs of the fans. In any case, Marvel Studios is going to be called out for either supporting a genocide or being antisemitic by fans on social media no matter whether Sabra’s origin is kept or not.
