During this year’s SDCC it’s been announced that Robert Downey Jr. will be returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom. The way through which the character will be introduced is currently unknown and fan speculation ranges from a completely different character to an alternate evil version of Iron Man.

The fan response has been mixed to the announcements, but if RDJ truly ends up playing an evil variant of Tony Stark who, in an alternate reality, turned into Doctor Doom instead of Iron Man, that opens one possibility that would allow us to see one of the most evil Hulk variants from the comics.

We’re talking about Maestro Hulk introduced in the ‘Future Imperfect’ storyline. He is a future version of the Hulk, who, after a nuclear war devastates the world, becomes a mad and tyrannical dictator ruling over a colony called Dystopia.

Though Bruce Banner was once a hero, he has lost all his redeeming qualities over time. He has even abandoned his love for Betty. Maestro and Doom in this doomed world are connected. Maestro Hulk teamed up with Doctor Doom to defeat the organizations A.I.M and The Pantheon, which threatened his rule. Once they were defeated, Maestro betrayed Doctor Doom, fought him, and nearly killed him, forcing Doom to flee in defeat.

Perhaps the MCU could set up this kind of alternate universe in which all versions of our beloved superheroes turn into monsters, including Iron Man who takes on the mantle of Doctor Doom, and Hulk who turns into Maestro.

That could also explain why Doctor Doom is coming to Earth-616, with his knowledge of time travel and technology, he might be coming to the mainline MCU to find a way to stop Maestro in his own reality.
