MCU Casting Secrets: Sarah Halley Finn on Avengers Stars, Pom Klementieff’s Wild Audition & Chadwick Boseman’s Iconic Accent

Casting the right actors is one of the biggest challenges in bringing superheroes to life, and no one knows this better than Sarah Halley Finn. As the casting director for the MCU, she has played a key role in selecting the stars who would become Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Now, she’s opening up about the process of casting the Avengers and what it took to find the perfect actors for these iconic roles. Finn was recently a guest on the official Marvel podcast and she revealed what the process looked like.

Our focus was very singular. It really was entirely about who is the best person to bring this character to life. And the once we got the main character, how do we best surround them.

You know so when you have somebody that’s newer on the scene like Chris Hemsworth, could we get Anthony Hopkins, could we get like…how do we then build the ensemble if its Chris Pratt, and he is known more for comedy? What if we bring in Zoe, who’s really we know is gonna up the ante for him and make it challenging?

Finn admitted that she never was casting the Avengers per se, which happened magically and organically according to the vision of creatives including Kevin Feige. She did admit that the reaction to ‘The Avengers’ was worth it all along.

The reaction to that film was electrifying for all of us and honestly humbling. […] Louis D’Esposito said people had tears in their eyes.

Finn’s highlights were definitely casting RDJ as Iron Man and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, both characters that have been dubbed by fans as perfect castings. Finn revealed the story of how both characters were cast, noting that RDJ’s story is legendary at this point.

Well with RDJ it’s a famous story now, that he was sked to screen test uh and it’s maybe not that we didn’t have a good sense that he would be a great fit for Tony Stark but I think that he ruled out any possible conversation that he wasn’t Tony Stark. I think it was so undeniable. He owned that character he brought it to life it was his it felt like there was no one else that could possibly play that part.

Samuel L. Jackson is Samuel L. Jackson. So that was exciting and at the time I think it was quite again, surprising to people because it was the first that many options had been considered and requested, and that became public somehow and so I think it was already a new bold idea that they were putting into place.

The casting director stated that one of the standout moments in her career was Pom Klementieff’s casting for Guardians of the Galaxy’s Mantis. The director said that Klementieff came to the audition without that many details regarding the character but she did make her audition “so out of this world wild” that they quite frankly did not know what to make of it.

I don’t think she had any idea what the character would look like or how that character would, speak but she had such a crisp and unique and original and energetic take on it that I remember James Gunn immediately was very blown away by her and what she was doing and of course she ended up playing the part.

Chadwick Boseman was determined to use an African accent in the film, and there were extensive discussions about whether it would be accepted by audiences at the time.

I think it’s really a beautiful story and ultimately Ryan and Kevin and everyone got on board with his vision and it became so much a part of the fabric of the film and I think it helped bring Wakanda to life, and ultimately influenced the culture.

She also shared how T’Challa’s accent became a significant part of pop culture. When they first searched for a young actor to play a younger version of Black Panther, they struggled to find kids who naturally spoke with that specific accent. However, just a few years later, while casting for ‘What If…?,’ they were overwhelmed with audition tapes from kids who had mastered the accent, showing the lasting impact of Boseman’s portrayal.

Finn emphasized that an actor’s personality plays a crucial role in bringing their character to life, allowing their natural traits to shine through. She highlighted how Robert Downey Jr.’s intelligence and charisma were key to his portrayal of Iron Man.

With Chris Evans, it was his initial reluctance to take on the role of Captain America that made him even more appealing, as his humility and quiet strength perfectly embodied the character. In Chadwick Boseman’s case, it was his deep sense of humility and humanity that made his portrayal of Black Panther so powerful and unforgettable.
