Robert Downey Jr. said he wishes Elon Musk would “tone down his behavior a bit,” taking a jab at the billionaire CEO who is often compared to Tony Stark.
Downey made this comment during a chat with podcaster Kara Swisher, who mentioned Musk has been “playing the role” of Tony Stark, the Marvel superhero Downey portrayed in the “Iron Man” and “Avengers” films.
The two have briefly appeared together on screen when Musk had a cameo in 2010’s “Iron Man 2,” where he met Stark at the Monaco Grand Prix.
In the “On With Kara Swisher” episode released Monday, Swisher asked Downey for his thoughts on Musk “acting like Tony Stark.”
She seemed to be referring to Musk’s outspoken personality, which is similar to Stark’s.
Downey responded, “I’ve only met him a few times. As a nearly 60-year-old recovering white American male, I just wish he would tone it down a little, but that’s not up to me.
“I get that the idea of, ‘It’s all fine because we’re going to Mars,’ doesn’t work for me. But you can’t ignore all the things he’s done that show why he’s important.“
In 2022, “Iron Man” writer Mark Fergus told New York magazine that the film’s take on Stark, who first appeared in comics in 1962, was influenced by Musk, Donald Trump, and Apple cofounder Steve Jobs.
Fergus said, “Musk combined Jobs’ genius with Trump’s showmanship. He had the fun factor, celebrity presence, and real business achievements.”
Musk became a pop-culture figure during his push to colonize Mars, his leadership at Tesla, and attention-grabbing products like the Boring Company’s flamethrowers.
He also made appearances in other movies throughout the 2010s, like “Machete Kills,” “Transcendence,” “Why Him?” and “Men in Black: International.”
However, as Musk became more politically active after buying X, his pop-culture presence has decreased.
Lately, Musk has been publicly supporting Trump’s reelection campaign.
