MCU’s Young Avengers: New Reports Hint at Their Possible Leader

‘The Marvels’ may have struggled at the box office, but it laid the groundwork for one of Marvel Comics’ most beloved superhero teams—the Young Avengers.

In the film’s closing moments, Kamala Khan visits Kate Bishop, hinting at a potential team-up and inquiring about Cassie Lang, who recently embraced her superhero identity as Stature after helping her father, Ant-Man, defeat Kang the Conqueror in the Quantum Realm.

Following the release of ‘Agatha All Along’ Wiccan aka Billy Maximoff is also expected to join the future team, as well as America Chavez and Ironheart, who is bound to get her own standalone show later this year.

Since ‘The Marvels’ initiative started due to Kamala’s idea and she was highly encouraged by Nick Fury to start it, fans have been wondering who will end up leading the team.

In his most recent AMA, Alex Perez shed some light on that part. A fan asked which MCU character would be the best mentor for the Young Avengers. Instead of choosing from the given options, insider Alex Perez revealed that Nick Fury and Monica Rambeau are actually working behind the scenes to form the next generation of heroes through S.A.B.E.R.

This initiative began after Monica reported on the Maximoff twins post-‘WandaVision.’ According to Perez, S.A.B.E.R. is actively monitoring young heroes like Kamala Khan, Kate Bishop, Riri Williams, Cassie Lang, America Chavez, Billy Kaplan, Skarr, Amadeus Cho, and more, aiming to recruit them before they fall into the wrong hands.

Alex Perez: Damn… objectively speaking? Nick Fury and Monica Rambeau. It isn’t mentioned in The Marvels but one of S.A.B.E.R.’s current goals (and Fury’s personal goals) is to try and form the next generation of heroes that will kind of take over for the Avengers, and it all started because Monica reported to Fury about the Maximoff twins after WandaVision. So they’re trying to get a handle on the situation and recruit the young heroes ASAP before they are corrupted or fall into the wrong hands. To my understanding, S.A.B.E.R. has tabs on: Kamala, Kate, Riri, Cassie, America Chavez, Billy (who just made his presence known at the end of Agatha All Along), Tommy (whom they believe is dead), Skarr, Amadeus Cho (spoilers) and a couple of more young heroes coming soon.

The only character mentioned that’s currently not in the MCU is Amadeus Cho, but he is heavily rumored to be included in the upcoming ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ so if Perez is correct, and he does end up being in the movie we can add him to the list of possible members.

Perez also mentioned why the team was rebranded. Insider said that Champions would be a more fitting name because most of the characters are older than their comic book counterparts and will likely be in college. Additionally, Champions makes sense since Riri Williams (Ironheart) and Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel) are involved, even though they weren’t part of the original Young Avengers lineup.

However, Perez clarified that Miles Morales and Sam Alexander (Nova) will not be part of the team. According to his sources (which he advises taking with a grain of salt), Miles Morales is expected to exist in a rebooted Sony Universe after ‘Secret Wars,’ separate from the MCU. Meanwhile, Sam Alexander’s debut is still far off, as the upcoming Nova project will focus on Richard Rider and a small group of Nova Corps members.
