‘Phases of the Moon Knight’ is the latest Moon Knight-centered storyline which explores the deep history of the Moon Knight legacy, revealing Marc Spector’s connection to previous incarnations of the Fist of Khonshu.

The storyline features Marc Spector’s modern-day violent justice and new Moon Knights from the ancient past. The story uncovers forgotten secrets of the Marvel Universe tied to this ancient Moon Knight’s saga.

The latest issue brought forward some well-kept history to light related to Vampires. In the story ‘Blood Moon, Blood Brothers’ by Tom Waltz and others, the Moon Knight from ancient Mesopotamia is introduced. The story sees Moon Knight battling Varnae, the first vampire in Marvel history, who is a demon linked to the deity Ba’al.

Varnae is not exactly a new character in the comics.

Varnae was an ancient sorcerer from Atlantis who became the first vampire through a ritual using the Darkhold. As the origin of all vampires, he ruled over them for centuries. He later chose Count Dracula as his successor, manipulated his life to make him a vampire, and then killed himself. Varnae returned to life after Doctor Strange wiped out most vampires and tried to reclaim his power.

Eventually, he possessed Blade, starting the global vampire conflict known as the Blood Hunt.

In ‘Phases of the Moon Knight’ #4 the vermin can be seen making a deal with Ramsin who wanted to use the Blood Moon to gain access to the throne, which was at its most vulnerable during this Moon’s phase.

Varnae is eventually defeated by Moon Knight setting up an interesting premise that the character was actually among the very first vampire hunters – and among the most powerful ones at that. And as the latest issue revealed, the Moon’s fight against the vampires transferred to the modern world as well.

What does this mean for the MCU? Well, you’re likely aware that Blade has been delayed again this time completely removed from Disney’s upcoming release slate. Feige did however reassure fans that the movie is still actively being worked on with Ali starring as Blade.

But what if these new revelations made the jump to the MCU? We already have Moon Knight in the cinematic universe and the live-action series already delved deep into his mythology and the many gods and monsters.

MCU could set up Moon Knight as a gateway for Vampires, and then, when ‘Blade’ is ready, add him to the mix as well, potentially even neatly setting up that rumored Midnight Sons project.
