Simon McQuoid is back with a new Mortal Kombat movie, Mortal Kombat II, the sequel to the relatively successful 2021 film. The film is scheduled for an October 24, 2025 release and now, the first images have been released, as well as some background information about the movie.

In a recent interview with the press, McQuoid revealed several details about the upcoming movie, some of which are intriguing, while others seem to be hilarious and, honestly, we cannot wait for the movie to come out.

And while a lot of things are still being kept secret, McQuouid confirms that the movie will be much bigger, as well as bolder. “We go to lots of different realms, so that in itself gives the film a very distinct and varied visual approach,” he said.

Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon also added that the stakes are much higher in this movie, as Shao Khan threatens to take over the world. “They keep score throughout the movie,” he said. “There’s a visual representation of who is winning…. It’s not just a tournament for the sake of a tournament. There are huge consequences, so you really are keeping score. And there are a lot of twists in it that keep you on your toes.”

McQuoid finally praised Karl Urban’s casting as Johnny Cage, claiming that it brings a lot to the movie. “We wanted a character that wasn’t just completely silly, comic book…It’s a character that could instantly go there and become too light and throwaway if we were to lean too much into the kind of cheese,” he said. “The casting of Karl Urban for that role allowed that character to have more depth.”

Based on the images and the information we have, it seems we’re in for a very entertaining sequel!
