Nathan Mitchell, Black Noir Actor, Discusses His Cameo in Gunn’s ‘Superman’

The Boys, one of the world’s most popular superhero series, premiered its fourth season on June 13, 2024, with the first three episodes. Initial reactions were mixed, but the series has gained momentum and is now Certified Fresh with high ratings.

This season has delivered numerous intriguing and shocking moments, many of which we’ve dissected in our weekly analyses. However, one character we haven’t yet discussed is Black Noir, who plays a significant role this season, having returned from the dead with a twist.

We won’t reveal what happened to the character or how he returned, but it’s confirmed that actor Nathan Mitchell has reprised his role. Recently, he sat down for an interview with Entertainment Weekly to discuss his character and share insights into the production.

During his interview with Entertainment Weekly, one unexpected topic that emerged linked The Boys to James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film. Recently, leaked set photos depicted Superman being apprehended by a character bearing a striking resemblance to Mitchell’s Black Noir. The actor himself responded to this on Twitter.

The resemblance is striking, leading many to joke about Black Noir making an unexpected cameo in the movie. Of course, this isn’t Black Noir (the character’s identity remains unknown at this time, though fans speculate it could be Ulysses, with Gunn keeping details under wraps). Mitchell, however, has commented on the photo in the interview mentioned earlier:

I think you saw the paparazzi photos that leaked from the Superman movie set showing a Black Noir-esque character. What was your reaction to seeing that?

That was such an honor to see. I might be missing something, but it is hard for me to imagine another superhero in pop culture right now that looks like Black Noir. The goggles were reminiscent and the all black. I don’t know 100 percent, but the possibility that I could be playing a character that has had an impact to the extent that it inspires an antagonist in a Superman movie, I couldn’t have thought or dreamed of that.

It is really cool because, in making a Superman movie, you’re also making a case about why Superman is needed and why he matters and why he’s relevant. If you’re doing it in the modern day in this world in 2024, the discussion around superheroes includes The Boys. So if you’re going to make a case for Superman, you have to make a case for Superman in context of a team like the Seven and showing that contrast. I think that’s a really smart thing to do, and I’m really excited to see the movie.

This is an intriguing perspective, but Mitchell also shared his thoughts on the same topic during a conversation with ScreenRant.

It was so cool; I was so surprised. I was like, “Wow, are they doing a version of Black Noir in this film?” and again, I don’t fully know what they’re planning. If I were to guess, I would say it’s a version of Black Noir in this shot that we’ve seen. My take on it is that if you’re gonna make a case for Superman in 2025, you have to make a case for him in the context of the current superhero landscape.

That superhero landscape includes The Boys and The Seven. So I think it’s really smart to compare and contrast and make a case for Superman in a world where a team like The Seven might exist. I don’t know for sure, but my guess is perhaps they’re doing something like that, and I’m really honored by the possibility that Black Noir could have been an inspiration for a character in a Superman movie.
