“Squid Game” is a South Korean thriller on Netflix where 456 players in financial trouble compete in deadly games for a massive prize. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk drew inspiration from his own struggles and South Korea’s class inequality, with Netflix picking up the series in 2019.
The first season launched in September 2021, becoming Netflix’s biggest hit and earning major awards. Season 2 premiered in December 2024, with the final season expected in 2025.
Netflix recently leaked the final season’s release date—June 27—in a YouTube video, which has since been taken down.
Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk originally envisioned the second and third seasons of Squid Game as one, but decided to split them due to having too many episodes. After season two, Gi-hun will face a major turning point in his life. Season three will delve into how Hwang In-ho became the Front Man and introduce Cheol-su, Young-hee’s robot boyfriend, along with a new game.
Since the second and third seasons were filmed back-to-back, the relatively close release dates make sense. Mark your calendars for June 27—we can’t wait!
