S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl has become one of 2024’s standout games. While it hasn’t hit the player numbers of titles like Black Myth: Wukong or Infinity Nikki, its success is extraordinary, considering it was created during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The game’s release is nothing short of a triumph.

In an interview with Forbes Ukraine, Maksym Krippa, the owner of GSC Game World, opened up about the tough journey of making the game. “The team worked almost nonstop before launch,” Krippa said.

This game was more than entertainment—it was a symbol of hope and pride for Ukraine, showing we can deliver world-class projects even under the hardest conditions.” Despite some small bugs, the team stuck to the November 20th release date to avoid burnout.

Their hard work paid off. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 sold over a million copies on its first day and reached 120,000 concurrent players on Steam. According to Krippa, the game has already turned a profit.

With planned DLCs and releases on other platforms, we’re confident this success will only grow,” he added.

Looking ahead, GSC Game World has big plans for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. Two DLC expansions and a multiplayer mode are in development, aiming to keep fans engaged and expand the game’s reach.

When asked about possibly breaking $1 billion in sales, Krippa was hopeful but cautious. “It’s hard to predict the total number of copies we’ll sell, and I don’t want to jinx it,” he said.

The game’s success may also lead to something bigger. Krippa confirmed that talks with Netflix about a TV series adaptation are underway. While no deal is finalized, he’s excited about the possibility, comparing it to The Witcher. “The Witcher became a source of pride for Poland, covering books, games, and a Netflix series. Stalker has the same potential for Ukraine,” Krippa shared.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2’s success follows in the footsteps of other game-based shows like The Last of Us and Arcane. With its deep lore and rich storytelling, a well-made adaptation could attract new fans and build on the franchise’s achievements.

For now, GSC Game World is celebrating the game’s strong launch, proving that passion and resilience can overcome even the toughest obstacles.
