American Primeval, a Netflix series directed by Pete Berg, is set in the American West in 1857 and explores the violent conflicts of the time, including clashes between culture and religion.
The trailer features the powerful line, “Why do you people have so much hunger to kill?”, which reflects the series’ focus on the brutality and moral struggles of this period. Written by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant), the six-episode series promises a dark, dramatic look at the fight between fear, hatred, and the loss of innocence in a lawless world.
Netflix greenlit American Primeval in December 2022, with Taylor Kitsch confirmed as a lead. In January 2023, cast members like Dane DeHaan, Jai Courtney, and Betty Gilpin joined. Filming began in New Mexico in February 2023 but was paused due to the SAG-AFTRA strike later that year. Mark L. Smith, also an executive producer, played a key role in bringing the series to life.
