DC and HBO’s Lanterns series is shaping up to be quite intriguing. After facing several setbacks, the show is gradually filling out its cast with some notable names, and the latest confirmed casting may hint at the series’ villain.
Garret Dillahunt has recently been confirmed for the role of “a self-righteous, conspiracy-minded man who hides his ruthless ambition behind a charming and calculated demeanor.” While this description is fairly vague, fans suspect it may suggest something more significant.
According to various rumors and theories circulating online, Dillahunt’s character might be the main antagonist of the series or connected to the villainous force at play. There’s also speculation that this storyline could extend beyond Lanterns, potentially leading to further appearances in the future.
The plot of Lanterns remains largely under wraps. What we do know is that it will be an Earth-based murder mystery inspired by True Detective, with James Gunn mentioning that it “leads into the overall story that we’re telling across the different movies and television shows.” The series will feature an “Ancient Horror” discovered on Earth, with the two main characters acting as “super cops on precinct Earth.”
Having both an older Lantern, Hal Jordan, and a younger one, John Stewart, suggests that the show is aiming to expand the Green Lantern universe. However, since Kyle Chandler is signed on only for this series and not for any movies, it seems unlikely we’ll see Hal Jordan in future projects. Garret Dillahunt’s character could play a role in that.
Based on the official character description mentioned earlier, it’s possible that he could be linked to a cult. If cults are involved in a Green Lantern story, there’s one clear candidate for the main villain, especially in light of Gunn’s comments about the “Ancient Horror on Earth.” Let’s explore that further:
This was later retweeted by DanielRPK, a well-known and trusted industry insider, which adds more credibility to the theory:
This theory is definitely intriguing, and based on the feedback we’ve received, Centre could very well be the main villain of the first phase of the DCU, considering he is both a god and a monster. What are fans saying about this? Let’s take a look:
