New ‘Spider-Man 4’ Director Hints at Possible Spider-Man Appearance in ‘Shang-Chi 2’

We learned almost a year ago that a new ‘Spider-Man’ MCU installment is in development. The problem was, that Jon Watts decided to step down, as the director recently explained, the success of ‘No Way Home’ would be impossible to emulate and he decided to focus on other projects, far from the MCU.

Now several names have been put forward as possible directors, and The Hollywood Reporter now reports that the most likely name to helm the movie is Daniel Destin Cretton.

Fans of the MCU are aware that this won’t be Cretton’s first MCU project as he was directing ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings,’ as well as two episodes of the so-far unreleased ‘Wonder Man’ Disney+ show. But, if the old announcements still stand Cretton is also bound to return to direct ‘Shang-Chi 2.’

In December 2021, Destin Daniel Cretton was confirmed to return as the writer and director for ‘Shang-Chi 2’ after the success of the first film, and he also signed an overall deal with Marvel. Cretton expressed his excitement about continuing his work with Marvel Studios and collaborating on new projects, including those with Onyx Collective.

Considering that one director now works for two franchises, it’s not that far-fetched to expect Spider-Man to appear in ‘Shang-Chi 2’ and for Shang-Chi to appear in ‘Spider-Man 4.’

Little is known about the plots of both movies, except that ‘Shang-Chi 2’ will have to address the origin and the purpose of the Rings, which are teased to have a great role in the upcoming multiversal stories. ‘Spider-Man 4’ is also rumored to be a heavily multiversal story, and including Shang-Chi in it would solve the problem of Shang-Chi not being addressed and his movie apparently being “pushed back” due to the factors which are not under Cretton’s or Liu’s control – as the star of the movie claimed a year ago.

Spider-Man and Shang-Chi did not exactly cross paths in the MCU, but they have been known to collaborate in the comics. Shang-Chi has even trained Spider-Man in martial arts, specifically to help him improve his fighting skills after losing his spider sense. They have teamed up to fight common enemies and have been part of larger superhero groups, like the Avengers.
