Lucasfilm has made a deal with Simon Kinberg to create a trilogy of Star Wars movies. Kinberg will write and produce the films alongside Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy.
Deadline reports these films might be episodes 10-12 of the Skywalker Saga, which started with George Lucas’s first Star Wars movie in 1977—a film that, along with Jaws by Steven Spielberg, changed blockbuster movies forever.
However, sources say Kinberg’s trilogy will start a new story rather than continuing the Skywalker Saga and will join other Star Wars projects in the works from James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi, and Donald Glover. Lucasfilm and Disney haven’t made any official comments yet.
Kinberg has worked with Lucasfilm before; he co-created the Emmy-nominated animated series Star Wars Rebels with Dave Filoni and Carrie Beck, which ran from 2014 to 2018. He also advised on Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, the 2015 movie that brought the franchise back under the direction of JJ Abrams.
He’s been a key player in other major franchises too, working as a writer and producer on the X-Men movies and the Logan spinoff starring Hugh Jackman, directed by James Mangold. He also produced the first two Deadpool movies and executive produced Deadpool & Wolverine (2024).
Based on Kinberg’s X-men movies results, a popular industry insider immediately expressed her dissatisfaction:
Additionally, he produced The Martian (directed by Ridley Scott), wrote Mr. & Mrs. Smith, co-wrote the start of the Sherlock Holmes series with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, and produced Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie film series starting with Murder on the Orient Express. Simply put, he knows his way around big franchises.
What do you say? Is Simon Kinberg the right guy for the next Star Wars trilogy? Let us know in the comments below.
