Is This Going Too Far? Kathleen Kennedy Unconcerned as Another Star Wars Trilogy on Failed Storyline Is Reportedly in Development

Yesterday we reported that a new trilogy of Star Wars movies is in the making. Deadline reports that these films could be episodes 10-12 of the Skywalker Saga, which began with George Lucas’s original Star Wars movie in 1977. That film, along with Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, helped transform blockbuster movies forever.
Lucasfilm has made a deal with Simon Kinberg, who has worked with them before. He co-created the Emmy-nominated animated series ‘Star Wars Rebels’ with Dave Filoni and Carrie Beck, which aired from 2014 to 2018. Kinberg also helped with ‘Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens,’ the 2015 movie that brought the franchise back under director JJ Abrams.
He has also worked on other big franchises, writing and producing the ‘X-Men’ movies and the ‘Logan’ spinoff starring Hugh Jackman, directed by James Mangold. Kinberg also produced the first two ‘Deadpool’ movies and was an executive producer for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ (2024).
While this seems like an exciting new era in Star Wars storytelling, fans aren’t as convinced, and once again Kathleen Kennedy is being criticized, this time due to some statements she made a while back.
A couple of years ago, Kathleen Kennedy said (via The Hollywood Reporter) that continuing to focus on George Lucas’s original storytelling would be the wrong approach. She suggested that the franchise was ready to move on from the Skywalker saga. But now, it looks like we might be getting Episode 10 and more.
Just staying within the construct of George’s storytelling, to keep chipping away at that, I think would be wrong.
The Star Wars sequels starring Daisy Ridley as Rey received mixed reactions from fans. Some liked the movies for their exciting action and new characters, but many were disappointed with the way the story was handled.
Fans particularly disliked how Rey’s character was written, feeling she was overpowered without enough backstory or development. The handling of legacy characters like Luke Skywalker also angered many, with some believing his character was treated poorly.
Now it seems that we’re in for round two as the reception to this news wasn’t ideal:
It’s difficult to find a positive reaction to this announcement, however, keep in mind that the details of Kinberg’s deal are unknown, and as far as we know it might be a different type of project unrelated to the original trilogy.
In any case, even if the movies turn out to be decent, Kennedy’s reputation as a franchise killer has already brought the chances of it not being review-bombed close to a zero, unfortunately.
