Over a year ago, Loki’s story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe seemed to come to a perfect end. After surviving an early plan to kill him off in Phase 2, Thor’s adopted brother transformed from a villain to a reluctant hero, sacrificing his freedom to save countless lives. But his journey didn’t stop there.
In Loki Season 2, he took on a new role as the God of Stories, sitting on a throne at the heart of the multiverse. This emotional twist tied up his entire character arc, even fulfilling Odin’s prophecy of Loki ruling from a throne.
Although there’s no confirmation of a third season, Loki’s return feels inevitable, especially with the Multiverse Saga heading toward its grand finale. One surprising clue about Loki’s future may come from What If…? Season 3. While Tom Hiddleston didn’t reprise his main Loki role, instead playing a Frost Giant version planning to turn Jotunheim into a luxury ski resort, the show’s finale introduced ideas that could set up Loki’s next big role.
Loki’s sacrifice in Season 2 seemed like a fitting end to his journey, but with the stakes in Marvel’s upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars rising, it’s hard to imagine him staying out of the action. The multiverse is in jeopardy, and if the movie follows the original comics, all of existence could be at risk.
Although Loki’s role as the protector of the multiverse might suggest he’ll stay out of it, letting everything collapse doesn’t seem like something he would do—especially for someone who has fought so hard to control his own fate, as some fans theorize.
Marvel’s multiverse rules are notoriously confusing, with terms like threads, planes, and dimensions often being used interchangeably. However, Loki’s position at the center of the multiverse is too crucial to overlook, especially after the post-credits scene in The Marvels, which showed different realities crashing together. Loki might just be the key to stopping total chaos.
What if Loki’s role as the God of Stories puts him directly in the path of the main villain in Secret Wars? If Doctor Doom emerges as the big threat, Loki might have to sacrifice himself—or his position—to stop him. However, a more exciting twist could be Loki choosing to step in, leading to a thrilling showdown.
A moment from What If…? offers a possible connection. The Watcher, Uatu, was judged by other Watchers for breaking their rule of non-interference. Instead of backing down, he argued that merely observing wasn’t enough.
Using a garden metaphor, he said, “A garden must be cultivated to thrive,” meaning harmful elements must be removed for growth. This idea mirrors the TVA’s controversial mission under He Who Remains, but with a more balanced approach.
Could Loki have a similar realization? His role as the God of Stories might lead him to understand that protecting the multiverse sometimes means taking action.
It’s also interesting that Uatu’s metaphor about cultivating a garden parallels Loki’s throne, placed beneath the roots of a massive tree. This connection suggests there might be a moment when Loki has to step down from his role for the greater good.
While Marvel hasn’t confirmed Loki’s return yet, leaving him out of the Multiverse Saga’s conclusion would be a huge missed opportunity. His story isn’t over, and the stage is already set for him to make one final, universe-altering decision.
