‘Thunderbolts*’ is one of the many upcoming MCU movies, but it stands out for a few important reasons. First, it will bring Marvel’s version of the Suicide Squad to the MCU. Second, it will introduce Sentry, one of the most powerful characters in comics, to the big screen.
‘Thunderbolts*’ follows a team of former antiheroes, including Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, U.S. Agent, and Taskmaster, who are brought together to face a dangerous mission while dealing with their complex pasts and relationships.
So far not much is known about the plot of the movie except for the fact that the team members will be set up and pitted against each other during a mysterious mission. The first test screenings reportedly showed that the movie has great potential and the reactions have been positive.
Now Daniel Richtman recently held a Q&A on X and revealed some details regarding the upcoming movie.
Let’s start with John Walker. According to the insider John Walker’s wife will dump him which will likely lead to an interesting subplot for future appearances. John Walker is (was?) married, but his relationship with his wife is hinted at rather than explored in-depth in the MCU, so this will likely affect his character development but won’t affect the events of the movie all that much.
Another fan asked Richtman about Bill Foster, played by Laurence Fishburne, and whether he appears in the upcoming ‘Thunderbolts*’ movie. Specifically, the person is curious if Bill’s storyline involving cancer (as mentioned in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’) will be addressed in the film, and if Ava is shown caring for him.
Bill Foster’s cancer is “only mentioned” in the movie, meaning that the film will reference it or acknowledge it in dialogue, but Bill himself does not have an on-screen appearance. The phrase “unless they added a cameo” suggests that there’s still a chance his appearance could be added later, possibly during reshoots.
One question was about Melina Vostokoff, played by Rachel Weisz, and whether she is mentioned in the movie at all. Richtman explained that Melina is not mentioned in the current version of the movie. However, he adds that they could add a mention in reshoots
The biggest amount of details have been revealed in connection to Taskmaster and Ghost. According to Richtman, Antonia Dreykov will have memory issues likely referring to her traumatic past and the experiments she underwent in ‘Black Widow.’ As a result, she struggles to remember things and needs reminders to stay on track.
Ava Starr allegedly helps Antonia manage these memory issues and over time this will transform into a real friendship.
‘Thunderbolts*’ is set to be released on May 2, 2025, and will be the final movie of MCU’s Phase Five.
