‘Nosferatu’ (2024) is a gothic horror movie directed by Robert Eggers. It’s a remake of the 1922 silent film “Nosferatu,” which was inspired by Bram Stoker’s novel “Dracula.” The film stars Bill Skarsgård as the vampire Count Orlok, with Nicholas Hoult and Lily-Rose Depp playing a married couple, the Hutters. Other actors include Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe.

The movie became an unexpected holiday hit. It premiered in Berlin on December 2, 2024, and was released in the U.S. on December 25, 2024, and internationally on January 1, 2025. The film was expected to make around $25 million in its opening weekend, but it did much better than that.

As of January 5, 2025, ‘Nosferatu’ has made $69.4 million in the U.S. and Canada, and $31 million internationally, totaling $100.4 million worldwide. The film was released alongside other movies and was originally expected to earn $25 million in its opening weekend.

However, after a strong start with $11.55 million on its first day and $7.6 million on its second, estimates were raised to $42 million. It ended up earning $21.7 million in its opening weekend and $40.8 million over five days, ranking third behind ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ and ‘Mufasa: The Lion King.’

The movie’s main marketing strategy, to keep Orlok’s design under wraps, clearly paid off.

Critics mostly praised ‘Nosferatu,’ giving it an 85% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 78/100 on Metacritic, with many calling it a thrilling and beautiful horror film.

The direction by Robert Eggers and the performances, especially by Lily-Rose Depp, were highly praised, with some describing it as hypnotic and intense. Overall, while the audience gave it a “B-” grade, many filmmakers and critics considered it one of the best films of the year.
