Markus “Notch” Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has stirred up excitement among his followers by hinting at a new project he’s considering—a spiritual successor to Minecraft, often dubbed “Minecraft 2.”
While Notch hasn’t been directly involved with Minecraft since selling Mojang, the studio behind the game, to Microsoft in 2014 for $2.5 billion, his recent comments suggest he might be ready to revisit the genre that made him famous.
On X, Notch shared his thoughts about the future of his game development. He revealed that he’s currently working on a game inspired by traditional roguelikes like ADOM and NetHack, combined with a first-person dungeon-crawling style reminiscent of Legend of Grimrock.
However, he also admitted that he’s been considering creating a new game similar to Minecraft, acknowledging that fans might prefer this direction.
In one post, Notch joked about the legal limitations of creating an actual sequel, saying, “No, it would be super illegal.” But he clarified that he could develop a new, original game in the same vein as Minecraft and call it something else. He referred to such projects as “spiritual successors,” admitting they often fall short of expectations but promising to give it an honest effort if that’s what players want.
Notch also opened a poll to his 3.6 million followers, asking whether he should prioritize his roguelike project or pivot to a Minecraft-style game. Unsurprisingly, the idea of “Minecraft 2” won the vote.
Following the poll, he stated, “I basically announced Minecraft 2,” adding that he’s excited to work on games again and willing to create something his audience truly desires.
While some fans are thrilled about the possibility of a Minecraft successor, others remain skeptical due to Notch’s past controversies, particularly remarks on social media that led Microsoft to distance itself from him during Minecraft’s tenth anniversary. These issues have caused parts of the Minecraft community to lose trust in its original creator.
It’s also unclear how far Notch’s new project will go. Creating a game of Minecraft’s scale is no small task, especially for a solo developer or a small team. Despite his resources and enthusiasm, fans are cautious about whether he can replicate the success of his original creation.
For now, Microsoft and Mojang continue to focus on updating the original Minecraft and expanding its reach to new platforms, such as the rumored Nintendo Switch 2. This means any game from Notch might be the closest thing to a Minecraft sequel we’ll ever see. Whether his plans will materialize or remain just ideas shared online is something we’ll have to wait to find out.
