Marvel Studios recently released a teaser trailer and the release dates for all the upcoming MCU shows we can expect in 2024/2025. It’s safe to say we will be thoroughly entertained both by live-action projects and animated shows that will see the return of plenty of notable characters.
‘Marvel Zombies’ is a new animated miniseries coming to Disney+. Created by Zeb Wells, it is based on the Marvel Comics series and is part of the MCU. The show takes place in an alternate timeline from the ‘What If…?’ episode ‘What If… Zombies?!’ (2021), where a group of survivors must battle former heroes and villains who have turned into zombies.
The show is expected to release in October 2025, almost a year following the conclusion of ‘What If…?’ Season 3, which is expected to release in December of this year.
Almost nothing is known about the plot of the show, except for what we were able to see in the teasers. The showrunners, Andrews and Winderbaum, revealed a scene where Shang-Chi and Katy, the last survivors in San Francisco, are saved by agents from the Ten Rings. When Shang-Chi gets bitten by zombies, Wenwu sacrifices himself to prevent the infection from spreading.
Five years later, Shang-Chi is leading a group through the desert, similar to “The Road Warrior.” Their journey is interrupted by Skrulls trying to steal their cattle, and Shang-Chi and his team, which may include Jimmy Woo, are ready to fight.
This suggests that Shang-Chi will be one of the main characters in the show, along with Kamala Khan, who was mentioned earlier.
The series will feature alternate versions of several characters from the MCU, including Yelena Belova, Katy, Kate Bishop, Red Guardian, Jimmy Woo, Death Dealer, Shang-Chi, Blade, and Xu Wenwu.
The zombies in the series will include Hawkeye, Steve Rogers, Abomination, Ghost, Scarlet Witch, Captain Marvel, Ikaris, and Okoye.
Now Ikaris’ inclusion is especially interesting, considering that this is the first project that the character will appear in following the release of ‘Eternals,’ and it might be a sign that something is on the horizon for Madden’s character.
If you can recall, last year rumors have been going around that a sequel to ‘Eternals’ is in development and that Richard Madden will return to reprise his role. But, and there’s a big but coming, supposedly after ‘The Marvels’ flopped at the box office Marvel Studios put several projects on permanent hold including ‘Captain Marvel 3’ and ‘Eternals 2.’
Considering that ‘Marvel Zombies’ has been in development for a long time now, it’s unlikely that this is the sole project in which Ikaris will return, but it’s definitely possible that it’s a sign that he will appear in future projects.
