Paul Jenkins, Sentry Creator, Reveals Marvel Studios Plans for a Sentry Film — But Only If They Greenlight It
Thunderbolts* is shaping up to be one of the most exciting upcoming releases. The film will bring together a new team of former villains and anti-heroes, while also introducing one of Marvel’s most powerful superheroes – Sentry.
Sentry will be portrayed by Lewis Pullman, and the trailers have already teased his incredible invincibility. We also know that Sentry will likely be a manufactured hero, and we can expect the former Avengers Tower to be reimagined as his Watchtower.
Despite being one of the most popular and powerful Marvel Characters, Sentry’s creation was for a long time a complicated matter. In 2000, Paul Jenkins and John Romita Jr. created a new five-issue Marvel Knights series about a character called The Sentry, which Jenkins had tried to pitch to both Marvel and DC for years.
To promote the character, Marvel created a fake backstory, claiming The Sentry was a forgotten creation from the Silver Age by Stan Lee, even older than the Fantastic Four. Later, Brian Michael Bendis brought The Sentry into the New Avengers series, with Jenkins himself appearing as a character in the story.
Now Jenkins recently sat down with Son of Jedah and revealed some interesting things regarding his collaboration with Marvel Studios. He shared that he has a contract with Marvel Studios to write a solo Sentry film, but it will only happen if the studio decides to go ahead with the project.
In addition to this, Jenkins also worked as a script consultant on the upcoming Thunderbolts* movie.
“It’s very cool to have my work recognized, and one thing I will say is that I have a contract, at least with Marvel, that if there’s a Sentry movie, I write it. So that’s good news. I also worked on the Thunderbolts* movie.”
I was able to give them insights into their character. It’s going to be interesting to see how it turns out. But I think some elements of it are good. As you can see from the trailer, the Sentry and the Void appear to be in Thunderbolts*.
During the production of the Thunderbolts* movie, there was speculation that a character named Sentry could be involved. Originally, Steven Yeun was cast as Sentry but had to leave due to scheduling conflicts caused by production delays.
Marvel Studios soon chose Lewis Pullman to replace Yeun in the role. More than a year ago Pullman revealed that Sentry will have molecular-manipulation powers, and we can sort of see him in his Void form in the trailer.
Pullman also declined to comment on his character’s status in terms of moral alignment in the movie. The actor said that his villain status is complicated:
God, I would love to know. I genuinely, I don’t know. It’s one of the exciting parts about being invited into the whole universe is there’s a lot of unknowns, and you just kind of got to go with the flow and embrace the unknowns of it all. But I would enjoy going in either direction. I can say that.
If you’re wondering how the Thunderbolts team will handle Sentry, rumors from a few months ago suggested that his character would have a no-kill rule in the MCU. However, in the latest trailer, we see him attacking civilians, making it clear that this “no-kill” rule may no longer apply.
