As you may know, DC’s plan for a shared movie universe, similar to Marvel’s MCU, has had a complicated history. It started with Zack Snyder’s DCEU, which had potential but ultimately failed due to a series of setbacks and poor decisions.
After Snyder left, Warner Bros. brought in James Gunn and Peter Safran to reboot the universe and create a fresh start with the new DCU, aiming to build something similar to the MCU. However, the DCU has only released a few projects, mostly on TV, and with Superman’s first big story coming next year, fans are concerned as Gunn has been more active on social media than making films.
Although James Gunn hasn’t made any mistakes yet—since the DC Studios TV shows are getting praise and he hasn’t had a chance to make a misstep with his films—he’s still facing criticism for how he’s managing the DCU.
Gunn is clearly ambitious, but some are questioning if his actions will live up to his promises. We recently discussed how the DCU has big plans but hasn’t delivered yet. Superman will be a big test for the franchise—it may not determine the DCU’s success or failure, but it will definitely shape its direction and tone moving forward.
Given the current situation, many people feel that Gunn isn’t doing a great job with the DCU. Popular industry insider Jeff Sneider recently wrote an article titled, “Why James Gunn Needs to Leave Social Media, Find His Kathy Kennedy, and Let His Work at DC Speak for Itself.”
This is a strong criticism, and we can understand where it’s coming from. Gunn has been very active on social media, but the DCU hasn’t shown much yet. While his plans sound exciting and heartfelt, there’s nothing yet to back up these claims.
Whether Gunn needs someone else to help run things, like Kathleen Kennedy does with Star Wars, is up for debate. However, there’s certainly some reason to question if Gunn is living up to the potential he has promised.
