Following Shocking ‘Creature Commandos’ Finale Princess Ilana Actress Maria Bakalova Says Her Story Might Not Be Over

‘Creature Commandos’ the first installment of Gunn’s DCU yesterday aired its last episode. The show was met with positive reviews and overall positive fan reception, which made it a success.

The final episode also served as an origin story for Nina Mazursky, one of the fan-favorite characters. It follows Nina’s tragic backstory, from her father’s experiments that turned her into a fish-like mutant to her struggles with bullying and life in the sewers, which led to her father’s death while trying to protect her.

In the present, Task Force M faces betrayal and conflict as they attempt to assassinate Rostovic. Nina is killed during the mission, and the Bride ultimately takes down Rostovic, uncovering her manipulation of Clayface. The episode ends with the formation of a new Task Force M and a post-credits scene showing Eric recovering from his injuries.

Princess Ilana Rostovic was one of the most important characters both for the show and for the future of the DCU considering the terrible vision that Cirice had regarding her. We don’t know how that vision will affect the DCU going forward considering that the character was killed by the Bride.

Voice actress Maria Bakalova is unsure as well. The actress recently sat down with Screen Rant to discuss the shocking finale and as it turns out, she was heartbroken with Nina’s death as much as fans were.

In her interview, Bakalova discussed the death of Nina and Princess Ilana in ‘Creature Commandos.’ She hinted that Princess Ilana’s story might not be over, suggesting she could have hidden powers, especially since she was shown capable of defeating superheroes in Circe’s vision.

Maria Bakalova: Yeah, we saw her in Circe’s vision. We saw her that she’s pretty much capable to kill superheroes somehow. So maybe she also has some superpowers. Who knows? Who really knows a lot about that place Pokolistan? Because I remember I was searching for it online back when I read the script, I was like, ‘Okay, so there is a place that somehow exists with the same name, but do we know more about it?’

Maybe it’s a place that a lot of humans live, but maybe within these people, their people, their preachers, with special abilities, with special powers. So I don’t know…I hope she’s not dead-dead. Maybe some people will be opposite [to] my opinion, because she has made some terrible choices, and she killed basically one of the nicest characters in this show.

Bakalova also expressed that it feels unfair for Nina to die and shared her wish that both Nina and Ilana could survive and return. She explained that Nina was one of her favorite characters, and she felt empathetic toward her. The actress also expressed interest in learning more about Ilana, especially why she acts the way she does, questioning Ilana’s motivations and her friendship with Clayface. She finds these character choices intriguing and hopes to explore them further.

Maria Bakalova: It’s not fair to kill Nina…but I wish both of them survived somehow, and [that] we see them again. Because, to be honest, I think these are my two favorite…it’s difficult to say my favorite characters, but I felt very empathetic towards Nina, and I do want to know more about Ilana.

I do want to know why is she like that [laughs] like, ‘Okay, basically you’re supposed to be the hero of your country, and you want to put it on fire? Why? Why do you do that?’ It’s a question that I feel like a lot of us are asking ourselves on the daily basis, but yeah, if we can get more sense of why is she like that in the future, why is she friends with Clayface? [Those are] interesting choices.

Ultimately, Bakalova hopes to return to the DCU, under any means necessary:

Maria Bakalova: I would love to! More than anything, because I feel like, with Creature Commandos’ first two episodes premiering back in December 5, and people loving it, it’s the biggest proof that we should keep doing this and the new DC Universe is going to have a great look. And I do want to be associated with something that comes to people and make people think about it, talk about it, feel for it. And knowing that James is going to be behind it, that’s for me, the biggest dream. So anything that he’s doing or he has in mind, I’m ready to jump in and do it.
